Chapter Thirteen

Two hours later Patton lay on his back, arms folded beneath his head, sheet covering the lower half of his body. His bones sank into the mattress, easing the aches and pains from the day. He hadn’t lied when he’d told Ellie about the lumpy motel bed. In comparison, the air mattress was like sleeping on a cloud.

He didn’t know what she used as detergent, but the sheets smelled as if they’d been hung out on the clothesline. There was nothing better than lying on fresh sheets after taking a shower. Well, he could think of a few things, one of which was on the other side of the wall.

Did Ellie wear pajamas or sleep naked like he normally did? In consideration of sleeping in another person’s house, he’d kept on his boxers. If someone tried to break in during the night, he wouldn’t want to be racing through the house with his gonads flopping in the wind. He probably should get some pajama bottoms to wear.

Was she wearing a nightgown, one that could easily be slipped up her body and over her head rendering her naked in seconds? Or a pair of skimpy bottoms and top that exposed more than it covered? One that made it easy to access the more important parts of her sexy body. A mumble came from the other side of the wall. Did she talk in her sleep?

The scent of freshly washed sheets wafted across his senses as he rolled to his stomach, crunched the pillow beneath his head, and pressed his erection into the mattress. He needed to quit thinking about her on the other side of the wall. Was she sleeping? Thinking about him the way he was about her?

He needed to get his mind off her. Think of something other than...damn. There he went again. He buried his face in the pillow. Maybe suffocating himself would help him sleep. It wasn’t that late, only eleven o’clock, and he’d been exhausted before putting in both security locks and tacking up blankets over the window, but now sleep eluded him.

Besides the allure of Ellie, he couldn’t keep thoughts of who smashed her window at bay. Did it have something to do with Miranda and the mysterious Bert? Would they find any answers at the library or bank? Would anyone at the bank explain about the check? If the letter accompanying it was any indication, probably not.

Along with working on Ellie’s mystery, he needed to get his ass in gear on researching the book. He only had a few months to get the rough draft to his editor. In the writing world, that wasn’t much time. He rolled to his side and gave the pillow a punch. Something niggled in the back of his mind. Something that gave him a sense that Ellie’s problem and his book were somehow connected.

The excitement of spending the day with a sexy woman, the near kiss in his room, the broken window, shopping, and cooking finally caught up with him.
